Media Player Classic — Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a pretty nice media player. Though it doesn’t support a wide range of video formats/MIME types like bigger media players (such as VLC), it does support various media formats. «Media Player Classic Cannot render file» error is thrown when Media Player Classic encounters a video format it doesn’t recognize or one it cannot play/handle. While this error may be from the MPC-HC software itself, it could also be that your video file is corrupt. If the cause of the error is from MPC, it might have been from a tiny misconfiguration or improper installation –which can be easily fixed from within the software. However, the fault can also lie with/in the video file itself.

In the article, you’ll learn the various cause of this error, the way forward for fixing the error, and alternatives to Media Player Classic, too, of course!

Part 1. Possible Causes of Cannot Render The Files in Players

Here are the major reasons why Media Player Classic and other players wouldn’t open your media file:

1. Wrong Configuration

This is usually the case with Media Player Classic. Every video player comes with certain files they must access before playing your media files. This includes but is not limited to codec files. Depending on how the media player in question stored these files on your device, they may no longer access such files, leading to errors. Your media player’s inability to access configuration files may be due to you knowingly or unknowingly tempering.

Usually, resetting the media player’s configuration could be the fix you’ve been looking for or uninstalling and reinstalling.

2. Improper Installation

Most media players, for example, on the Windows Operating System, come with an installer. Software applications implement this measure to prevent future difficulties that could be faced by their esteemed users/customers. During installation, various configurations are made and paths set. If the software misses this, then you’re bound to run into issues.

It would help if you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the media player. Maybe the software will get it right on your next installation.

3. Unavailable Video Codec

Although MPC-HC does not officially support third-party codec files, this is one of the top causes of video errors —not just with MPC but also with most other media players.

While you can automatically update codec files on some media players via the menu -> settings, some don’t come with that option, so you’ll have to install codec files manually.

4. Corrupt Media Files

When you encounter this error, at first, it is almost not obvious that your media file is corrupt. Especially if you discover that other media files play the same ‘corrupt’ file. But file corruption is the top cause of media player errors.

You can use a dedicated video repair tool (like the one mentioned below) to easily fix almost every possible video file error while sparing yourself the troubles.

5. Virus Infection

Of all the causes of media player error, virus infections are the most misunderstood and annoying! Sometimes you’ll remember playing the same file with the same player some time ago, but suddenly, your play throws a «Cannot Render The File error.» If that’s your case, then it’s almost definitely a virus at work! Learn some methods to repair virus infected video files are very necessary.

Fix? Um. Yes. This one is tricky as some malware/virus could be a real pain in the butt. So, apart from using good antivirus software to scan your device, you should also consider updating your operating system’s software or regular backup you files. Make this a habit.

Possible Reasons for «Cannot Render the File» Error

1 Install Error of Media Player

For example, most media players come with an installer on the Windows operating system. This safeguard is implemented by software programs to avoid future problems for valued users/customers. Various settings and routes are created throughout the installation process. If the program misses this, you’re going to have problems.

2 Wrong Media Player Configuration

In most cases, this is the case with Media Player Classic. Before playing your media files, every video player requires access to specific files. This contains codec files but is not restricted to them. Depending on how the media player on your device saved these files, they may no longer be accessible, resulting in «media player cannot render the file» errors. It’s possible that you consciously or inadvertently tempered your media player’s ability to access configuration files.

3 Unsupported Video Codec Files

Although MPC-HC does not officially allow third-party codec files, this is one of the most common causes of video problems in most other media players, not only MPC. While some media players offer the ability to automatically update codec files through the menu — settings, some don’t. Therefore, you’ll have to manually install codec files.

4 Damaged and Corrupt Media Files

When you first see this error, it’s virtually impossible to tell if your media file is faulty, particularly if you find that other media files also play the same ‘corrupt’ File. However, the most common reason for media player failures is file corruption.

Solution 1. Convert File to Compatible Format

Although MP4, MKV and AVI are widely used file formats, they might become incompatible with various media players owing to a lack of codec to result in media player cannot render the file error. Here’s how to use VLC to convert the File.

Solution 2. Use Different Media Player

The media player you’re using may have a problem. In this case, just switch to a different media player to test whether the video will play. Windows Media Player or VLC are two options. If the media player classic cannot render file issue continues, there’s likely a problem with the File itself.

Cannot Render The File — Help

Member Join Date Jul 2014 Location United States

I edited a video in Movavi Video Suite 12 last night and now when I try to play it I am getting "cannot render the file."

I’m not sure why this happened or how to fix it. I have tried to play other mp4’s using Real Player and they play fine. I did notice that almost all of the media info is missing for this file though vs what is on the other files.

I’m a video editing noob so I really have no clue what any of it means.

I did also notice that in the editor, one of the source files does not have the yellow banner under it that the others did. I figured that probably means something also.

Any help that you guys could provide would be very much appreciated!
