Wavefront OBJ

OBJ format is a popular plain text format, however, it has only basic geometry and material support.

There is no support for armatures, lights, cameras, empty objects, parenting, or transformations. See Compatibility for more information.

Since many applications use a different axis for ‘Up’, there are axis conversion settings, Forward and Up axis – By mapping these to different axis you can convert rotations between applications default up and forward axis.

Blender uses Y Forward, Z Up (since the front view looks along the +Y direction). For example, its common for applications to use Y as the up axis, in that case -Z Forward, Y Up is needed.

Objects: Apply Modifiers

Export objects using the evaluated mesh, meaning the resulting mesh after all Modifiers have been calculated.

For properties that have different settings for the viewport/final render pick which is used for output. One example where this is important is the Subdivision Surface Modifier .

Use viewport properties.

Use final render properties.

Geometry Properties

Write out the active UV layers coordinates from Blender.

Write out Blender’s face and vertex normals (depending on the faces smooth setting).

Mostly this isn’t needed since most applications will calculate their own normals but to match Blender’s normal map textures you will need to write these too.

Write out the active vertex colors attribute layer, if present. Colors are exported in “xyzrgb” OBJ extension format.

Write out quads as two triangles. Some programs only have very basic OBJ support and only support triangles.

Curves as NURBS

Write out NURBS curves as OBJ NURBS rather than converting to geometry.

Material Properties

Write out the MTL-file along with the OBJ. Most importers that support OBJ will also read the MTL-file.

Export MTL library using PBR extensions (roughness, metallic, sheen, clearcoat, anisotropy, transmission).

When referencing paths in exported files you may want some control as to the method used since absolute paths may only be correct on your own system. Relative paths, on the other hand, are more portable but mean that you have to keep your files grouped when moving about on your local file system. In some cases, the path doesn’t matter since the target application will search a set of predefined paths anyway so you have the option to strip the path too.

Uses relative paths for files which are in a subdirectory of the exported location, absolute for any directories outside that.

Uses full paths.

Uses relative paths in every case (except when on a different drive on Windows).

Uses relative / absolute paths based on the paths used in Blender.

Only write the filename and omit the path component.

Copy the file on exporting and reference it with a relative path.

Grouping Properties

Write out each Blender object as an OBJ object.

Note that as far as Blender is concerned there is no difference between OBJ Groups and Objects, this option is only included for applications that treat them differently.

Generate an OBJ group for each part of a geometry using a different material.

Export the name of the vertex group of a face. It is approximated by choosing the vertex group with the most members among the vertices of a face.

Write Blender’s sharp edges as smooth groups.

Smooth Group Bitflags

Generate Bitflags for smooth Groups.

Animation

Exports a numbered OBJ for each frame from the start to the end frame. Please be aware that this can take quite a long time.

Frame Start, End

The first and last frame to export, used to determine the range of exported frames.

Compatibility

NURBS surfaces, text3D and metaballs are converted to meshes at export time.

Importing

Import geometry and curves to the OBJ format.

If there is a matching .MTL for the OBJ then its materials will be imported too.

Properties

Transform

Value by which to scale the imported objects in relation to the world’s origin.

Clamp Bounding Box

OBJ-files often vary greatly in scale, this setting clamps the imported file to a fixed size.

What is an OBJ file?

OBJ files were first developed by Wavefront Technologies, a video graphics company specializing in animation software, but has since been adopted by other 3D vendors. OBJ files are essentially text files that contain the 3D object’s information in a plain text format.

The primary uses for OBJ files are to store a 3D model/object and transfer the file to another 3D graphics software or device. OBJ files store the 3D object’s geometry information but can also store multiple colors and textures. However, they cannot store any scene information or animations and do not support parenting or empty objects.

The reason to use OBJ files over other file formats is due to their simplicity and wide range of support from other 3D graphics software. This is because OBJ files are an open source file format, meaning that it has been made freely available to distribute or modify. Consequently, OBJ is now considered a universal 3D file format and is supported by many 3D graphics and image editing software.

How to import an OBJ file into Blender?

Follow the steps below to import an OBJ file into Blender.

  • Click on File at the top left corner of the window > Import > Wavefront (.obj)
  • Browse through the files to find your desired OBJ file (note that you will only be able to see and select OBJ files)
  • Select Import OBJ

Before clicking on your OBJ file, there are a few settings to be aware of, which are:

  • Include smooth groups – Surrounds the OBJ’s smoothing groups with sharp edges. This will only be displayed when you use an edge split modifier
  • Include lines – Includes OBJ lines and two sided faces as mesh edges
  • Clamp size – Clamps the OBJ to a fixed size
  • Forward/Up – This converts the forward and up axes, since it’s common for some other software to use different axes
  • Split by object/group – Splits the OBJ by object or group and organizes names according to the OBJ file
  • Keep vert order – Compared to splitting the OBJ by object or group, this keeps the vertex order of the OBJ file

There are no prerequisites or add-ons required to import OBJ files.

When importing, you may also need to keep in mind that the OBJ will be placed at the point where it was set in the OBJ file. This may not be in the center of your scene or where you expect it to be. Another factor to consider is the object’s scale, since its scale may differ from the rest of your scene and therefore be difficult to locate.

If you are unable to find your imported OBJ, select the object from the outliner and click period on the numpad to zoom to the object.

How to export an OBJ file from Blender?

Follow the steps below to import an OBJ file into Blender.

  • Click on File > Export > Wavefront (.obj)
  • Choose the destination to save your OBJ file
  • Select Export OBJ

There are a few different settings for exporting OBJ files, here is what they do:

  • Limit to selection only – Exports only the selected objects. If unselected, all objects in the scene will be exported
  • Objects as OBJ objects/groups/material groups – This writes out each object/group/material group as an OBJ
  • Animation – This exports a numbered OBJ file for each animation frame
  • Scale – Sets the global scale for export
  • Forward/Up – This converts the forward and up axes, since it’s common for some other software to use different axes
  • Apply modifiers – This exports the mesh with modifiers applied as seen through the 3D viewport
  • Smooth groups – Writes smooth groups data
  • Write normal – This writes out the face and vertex normals. You may want to use this setting if you have used normal map textures.
  • Include UVs – Writes out the UV layers coordinates
  • Write materials – Creates a material file (.mtl) alongside the OBJ
  • Triangulate faces – Triangulates the faces of the mesh (quads become two triangles)
  • Curves as NURBS – Writes out NURBS curves instead of converting to geometry
  • Polygroups – Separates any vertex groups into OBJ groups
  • Keep Vertex Order – This keeps the vertex order in place when exporting

There are no prerequisites or add-ons required to export OBJ files.

Blender objects use materials to add color and shading to each mesh face. We assign textures to each material. The UV map image textures are assigned to a material in a process called skinning. You might just need to select the object and then look in the Material and Texture properties. Each Texture will have a folder icon to set the location of the texture image file.

YouTube offers many how-to videos about how to UV wrap an object. Just don’t make your task too difficult. You probably only need to set the correct image texture png for each UV texture.
