GPU-Z VRel, VOp

well i have come to using GPU-Z to see what is happening when i have fps drops and stuff.

seems the only thing i can see is VRel and VOp in the perfcap reason.

what are the reasons for this? could it be my PSU isnt sufficient enough? it is CORSAIR 650W ENTHUSIAST SERIES™ TX650 V2-80 PLUS® BRONZE.

this happens with no overclock. it also happens when i turn all the power settings up ie. mV and power limit.

Tbh its not causing me any problems i would just like to know.

They are normal states for the GPU.

VRel = Card in maximum boost state as limited by current voltage

VOp = Card in maximum boost state as limited by maximum permitted voltage (card running at maximum overvolt)

You can also get:

Thrm = Card limited by temperature (Target temp exceeded)

pwr = Card limited by power consumption (TDP exceeded)

Util = Card not in maximum boost state due to low GPU load.

The top two states are normal. In any reasonably demanding game you’ll have one or the other depending on if you’ve overvolted your card you not. The next two states occur when the GPU is starting to reduce it’s clockspeeds due to an event (power usage too high or card running too hot). The last state is what you get at idle, or if a game isn’t very demanding and the card clocks down to save power.

Give us a screen shot of GPU-Z’s sensor tab too.

The PWR perfcap reason means the GPU is hitting the Power Consumption limit.

You’re hitting the power limit perf cap there. As temps increase, so does voltage and heat. as voltage goes up, so does the required power. When you hit the power limit prescribed in the bios for the GPU, it will throttle the core and voltage to bring it back down where it should be.

A couple of things might help, assuming you can use Afterburner or PrecisionX on a mobile GPU.

1. Create a custom fan curve to keep the GPU cooler
2. Increase the power limit slider in MSI AB / EVGA PCX

One more point. Do NOT run Furmark any more. This may have already contributed to the lacking performance or accelerated wear on the cooling solution. If you do increase the power limit slider of this card, this will also increase temperatures further, in turn causing more throttling. I wouldn’t recommend this.

In the end, this is why I hate gaming laptops.

Needs a good cleanout, possibly a good thermal compound job on the cpu and gpu, mobo chipset.

Other thing, perhaps a bigger brick, other things, lower resolution and detail levels for smoother gameplay, it uses a Mobility gpu which are tailored for power sipping not running full out.

This being a laptop there really isn’t a whole lot out there to OC that cpu

This isn’t a heat issue, I’m not sure why people are thinking it is. There is a completely different Perfap reason for heat, it would be coming up Thrm if the GPU was hitting the thermal limit.

Yes, don’t run furmark, it isn’t an accurate test for power throttling. It basically causes the card the power throttle immediately.

Run something like Unigine Heaven in a window with GPUz running and take a screen shot of the sensors tab.

And the GPU would be thermal throttling and would probably shut down before the temperature would be high enough to cause an increase in power draw.

What is more likely is that something is lowering the Power Limit(MSI Afterburner for instance lets you drop the power limit to 50%), or the power sense circuit on the GPU is starting to go wonky.

What is more likely is that something is lowering the Power Limit(MSI Afterburner for instance lets you drop the power limit to 50%), or the power sense circuit on the GPU is starting to go wonky.

I think if you look at the sensors tab screenshot there, you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. It’s idling at around 50c, load temps are much higher. As temps increase during load, you’ll also notice voltage increasing until it hits the power limit perf cap, at which time it throttles. temps, clock and voltage drops, and then returns to normal, and then throttles again.

As I stated. increasing the power limit in AB may alleviate the issue, but creating a custom fan curve to keep the GPU cooler under load certainly can’t hurt that either.

I will also concede, that something could be «wonky». But before resorting to the conclusion that the GPU is just broke, I’d try the alternatives that I listed.

I do see some green in the GPU-Z screenshot though.

But as long as you can run everything again without huge fps drops you’re fine then.

I looked at the screenshot before I posted. I don’t not see what you are talking about.

Idle temperature means nothing. This is a laptop, idle temps will be high because the fan is likely turned off at idle. And the load temps are not going up that high. Judging by the graph they look like thy are getting up into the 70°C range. I can guarantee the temp is staying below 82°C, because that is the thermal throttle temperature, and the GPU isn’t thermal throttling.

That isn’t how it works, at least not noticeably. The voltage on the GPU doesn’t go up because of the temperature. The voltage goes up because the driver is telling the voltage regulator to increase the voltage to keep the GPU stable at the higher clock speeds.

Yes, if temperatures get really high, then the efficiency will go down and the power draw will increase. However, silicon has to get really really hot for this efficiency to matter to the point that the card would throttle due to the power limit. In fact, the temperature would have to be so high, the GPU would already be throttling due to the temperature. We aren’t seeing thermal throttling in the sensor tab, so temperature is not an issue.

2. Idle temps are the baseline, and it’s clear that as the graph goes up in temps, so does the voltage. Correlation in this case, does equal causation.

I’ll agree to disagree. I would rather try to set a custom fan curve to help the power limit, and set a higher power limit, than just automatically assume the GPU is just jacked up. Better to at least research all options before jumping to that conclusion, but. according to what you’re saying, just wing it, and go right to, «uh, it’s broken». I’m sincerely sorry, but, that’s just stupid beyond reason.

I’m going to refute this one. Temperature itself does not increase power draw however, heat does impact how quickly a transistor can switch states which is the real thing that needs to be considered. It’s not unrealistic that nVidia GPUs factor temperature in when determining what voltage to use. There are only two ways to make a transistor switch faster which is a higher driving voltage or lower operating temperature. Also, ohm’s law states that when resistance is constant that V ∝ I so any increase in voltage will have a corresponding increase in current and heat produced is a function of the square of the current.

So, temperatures might be reasonable but, increased driving voltage will increase current draw and if temperatures are reasonable, could mean that a power limit would be hit before a temperature limit but, that isn’t to say that temperature doesn’t factor into the equation even if it’s not the limiting factor.

PerfCap Reasons [GPU-z]

Below are the PerfCap Reasons, along with a brief description to do with what is causing them.

vRel = Reliability. Indicating performance is limited by voltage reliability.
VOp = Operating. Indicating performance is limited by max operating voltage(Hardware Limit).
Pwr = Power. Indicating performance is limited by total power limit.
Thrm = Thermal. Indicating performance is limited by temperature limit.
Util = Utilization. Indicating performance is limited by GPU utilization.

Example here, GPU is not being used, however GPU-z has woken the device. The GPU is not at a higher speed because the GPU usage is low. PerfCap Reason shown in the blue outline below.

The 980 and below uses a Core different to the Ti’s GM200.

The 980Ti is based on the GM200 found in the Titan, whereas the 980 and below are GM206.

They use different base clock speeds and in general run at a faster speed than the GM200 equivalents even when overclocked. RAM remains the same other than select TI’s that use Hynix instead of Elpida.

just ignore my image — i modded my bios for gaming and was having some fun in afterburner to post that.

found what the max core speed my card does for that voltage then bumped down 26Mhz (two boost bins) for «game stable» regardless of driver version. yeah, i have had a drive spit out what was a stable OC before.

Can anyone explain this "none" PerfCap Reason?

But there is a wired thing. I tried redo the thermal paste and ignored the Video memory chips and some small things around the CPU that was supposed to be something about power supply. Then the system stuttered while CPU and GPU both under 80 degrees and PerfCap Reason shows None. Is it possible for Video memory chips to overheat?

VRAM can overheat and cause issues, sure. I’m not sure if stuttering is a common symptom, but it’s definitely not good. You said you "ignored" the memory chips, what exactly does that mean? Usually, at least on desktop graphics cards, VRAM makes contact with the heatsink by way of thermal pads. Sometimes you can reuse them, sometimes you can’t. If they’re in poor condition, once you break that bond, they have to be replaced.

I have similar concerns about "small things around the CPU. " those are probably VRMs (voltage regulation modules) which are responsible for regulating the power that goes to the CPU. Like VRAM, these generally don’t have temperature sensors, but they can get quite toasty and bad things can happen if they get too hot. In my experience with desktops, sometimes these have heatsinks, sometimes they don’t. but they all, at a minimum, do rely on some amount of case airflow (even if they don’t have heatsinks) to keep the heat under control.

Once you get that under control, instead of artificially making your GPU work harder by inflating the resolution or AA settings, take a look at Throttlestop. You may be able to overclock your CPU a little bit with it. Side note: don’t rely on Furmark to find CPU bottlenecks. It’s designed to torture your GPU and not much else. Saying you’re CPU bottlenecked in Furmark is like saying you’re GPU bottlenecked in Prime95. Keep GPU-Z open and possibly logging while you’re playing a game, or at least running an all-around benchmark like 3DMARK or something.

Actually, on that note, it’s possible your CPU may be throttling to some extent under heavy load, like gaming. As a laptop chip, it’s going to have more stringent limits for power and temperature than its desktop counterparts. This is one of the reasons why Throttlestop exists. To monitor CPU frequency, you might be able to use HWiNFO64. I believe it supports logging as well, so you can play a game, go back and check the clockspeed it was running at, at any given time.

I tried replace the thermal pads on VRAM and VRM. But the pads are little bit thicker, which may causing a bad contact for heatsink and GPU&CPU. So I removed them for a little test. And I put them on after that test.

Вы урезали напряжение, вот она и упирается в ваш лимит. Если график енергопотребления не прыгает квадратами а в виде прямой, то все нормально. Я, например, ради максимальной эфективности поставил лимит на температуру которая меня устраивает (предварительно фан кулеров поставил на 90%).

Если кому-то интересно.
То я потратил около 2 часов, но добился того, чтобы в окошке этой опции ничего не было и более того я добился невероятных результатов для Зэке, всего выкрутив по ядру 31 Mhz, карл!

Привет,
Первое что нужно сделать — это "пощупать" карту,а именно выяснить на какой частоте ядра, у неё будет пустое значение в PrefCap, более того оно должно устраивать Вас, но я считаю что не нужно выжимать соки из ВК, эти 25+- сол погоды не сделают, а карта будет при этом на пределе. В АБ жмёт ctrl+f и в открытом графике выставляем ровную линую с найденной частотой, к примеру 1911Mhz. Начинайте выставлять частоту примерно с 0.975V
Второе. После того как нашли нужную частоту ядра, уменьшаем вольтаж путём снижия с 0.975 и вниз, по шагам, давая ВК поработать на этой частоте/волтаже 10-15 мин, если всё в норме, то идем дальше, снижаем до м. вот тут зависит от Mhz по ядру, т.е. чем выше они, тем больше вольтажа нужно ВК. Как бы понятно, что при уменьшении вольтажа на ВК, уменьшается температура камня . Вобщем снижаете вы до значения 0.9V — это самое оптимальное, но к примеру при моих 1911 Mhz, вольтаж у меня 0.912, при 0.9 она отваливается, т.е. находите предел когда отваливается и повышаете на шаг перед пределом, тут я думаю всё понятно. Нашли значит Mhz по ядру, пустота в PrefCap температура упала, потребление упало ниже плинтуса, в моём случае 1080 потребляет всего 155-158 Ватт, при 565-570 сол и дальше ставите +500 по памяти, можно меньши или больше, смотрите уже по обстановке. Это то, что касается ювелирной настройки ВК и самое главное, точнее какой плюс в этом, в том, что ВК работает в очень щадящем режиме.
Третье. Температура. Как я добился 52-53 ночью и 54-55 днем при 2000 об/мин (55%) на асус рог стрикс 1080 спросите вы? Есть 4 фактора, которые повлияли на это:
1. Это Asus ROG Strix с её крутым охлаждением. Почитать можно в обзорах =)
2. Даунвольтинг. Снижается вольтаж на ядро, снижается потребление, снижается тепловыделение.
3. ВК у меня одна и установлена в игровом пк. Снизу, на расстоянии с палец я установил 150мм кулер от крышки системника, который дует примерно 1650 об/мин, второй я снял так же с корпуса, который обдувал HDD, диаметр у него 120 и крутится около 1450 об/мин, но установлен он немного под наклоном в задней части ВК т.е. обдувает её по диагонали, тем самым выгоняя теплый воздух из радиаторов. За счет этих нехитрых манипуляций я добился минус 5-6 С
4. Кондиционер в комнате, настроенный 22-23 С =)

За счёт всех этих пунктов я добился такой С, при таких показателях.

Он очень помог мне разобраться в этом вопросе, а так же этому форуму, т.к. без него, я бы не познакомился с d844. =)

ps. Спустя месяц, мне удалось снизить вольтаж до 0.893V при повышении ядра всего на 16 Mhz! Память +500 , но тут важный момент , значение в 5006 Mhz по АБ, которое достигается путём увеличения памяти от номинальных — это нормальная частота в играх, которую достигает ВК сама, т.е. по сути имеем родные заводские показатели, при 550-570 сол. Скрин приложил.

Perfcap reason IDLE ?

Hello, i am testing my EVGA 2080 super black running heaven and gpuz checking everything and notice that my prefcap reason is idle even if the system is under load for 1 second it changes to pwr and then it goes back to idle, my question is this normal or the is something holding back my pc?

everything is stock no overclocks and i am using the provided psu cables with one cable that terminates in 2 8pin connectors.
