There is no doubt that Ultimate Edition provides you with many features compared to Community Edition; however, it is a licensed IDE, and thus, you need to pay money to get the license.

The cost is US$500 per annum for organisations and US$150 per annum for individuals.

IntelliJ Community vs Ultimate

Depending on the project, you can choose the Community Edition of the IDE if you do not want to spend more money and only need some functionalities. On the other hand, if you can spend some money and you require multiple frameworks, build tools, developer tools, you can go on with the Ultimate edition of IntelliJ.

I love this IDE very much, and I’m using Community Edition right now. I’m just wondering if Ultimate has any additional benefits for Android development. If so, what are those benefits?

No, for Android Dev only the UE (Ultimate Edition) it is not probably worth the money. The CE (Community Edition) supplies you with most (if not all) what you actually need to develop a real-world Android project.

IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate Edition is very much worth his money if you have to use it for a wider spectrum of languages/frameworks/projects.

As you can see, if you have to use it for web development, or in an enterprise-level environement, you will have to buy the UE. For Java/Android only, the UE is quite an overkill.

Community Edition: open source and available free of charge. The Community Edition is covered by the Apache 2.0 license, and is built together with the open community around jetbrains.org.

Ultimate Edition: professional and fully-featured commercial IDE provided by JetBrains. The Ultimate Edition is built on top of the Community Edition with many extra features for web and enterprise development. You can download IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate from http://www.jetbrains.com/idea. Getting started

Getting set up to use Jetbtain IntelliJ is actually very simple; this cross-platform IDE is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. To get started on macOS

  1. Follow this link to get the IntelliJ software.
  2. Click on the Download option.

  5. Open the downloaded file. A message will populate up on the screen which says verifying and opening. After this screen pops up, drag the IntelliJ to the Applications folder and drop it

The most basic and useful command on IntelliJ is by far the Alt + Enter function. This keyboard shortcut can be used to fix just about anything by showing you actions for the current context.

If you notice an error in your code, place the cursor on the error and press Alt+Enter to display a list of suggested fixes for the problem.Alt+Enter can also be used on code that doesn’t have an error, warning or suggestion, rather it will show you Intention Actions and Inspections.

When navigating between errors and warnings within the editor, you don’t need to use your mouse. Use the F2 shortcut to quickly jump to the next error, warning or suggestion. Combine this with either Alt+Enter, to see all suggestions and pick one, or Shift+Alt+Enter to apply the first suggestion.
