When you remove the battery from your laptop, the board will reset and you will have a fresh start upon plugging it back in.

Unplugging Laptop Battery

To do this, simply disconnect the battery from your laptop and then let it sit for a few seconds. After a couple of seconds, plug the battery back and boot up your laptop to see if the issue persists.

Update Firmware

If reconnecting your laptop’s battery does not fix the issue for you, there is a good chance that the issue is being caused by your laptop’s firmware. This can usually happen when you haven’t updated your BIOS firmware for quite a while. If you are already running the latest firmware version, you may skip this and jump to the next solution. In such a scenario, you will have to look up for any firmware updates for your model, download them and then get it installed. To do this, follow the instructions down below:

This can happen when you use the auto-detect utility from Dell that updates all of your drivers. Most of the modern PCS now offer software that can update the BIOS without going into the BIOS. If that’s not possible, you will need to check with the Motherboard manual to update it via a USB drive and through the UEFI or BIOS.

It is also recommended to disconnect the power supply or battery and keep it that way. Post 30 seconds, you can reboot, and TPM should work now.

3] Reinstall Trusted Platform Module Driver

• Open Power Menu using Win + X, and then click on Device Manager
• Locate Trusted Platform Module under Security
• Right-click on it, and click on Update Driver and click on Search automatically for drivers
• The next screen will then prompt you to search for updated drivers on Windows Update.
• This will open Windows Update, and you can then navigate to Advanced Options > Optional updates
• Check if there is a driver update available. If yes, then update the TPM drivers.

External TPM modules are common, except that it wasn’t popular until Windows 11 made it a requirement. Yes, you can add TPM externally, and they are available for as low as $50. Post that, you will have to make sure Windows and BIOS/UEFI recognizes it.

TPM device is not detected on Dell Laptop

If I go into the BIOS System Logs > BIOS Events, I see this same event over and over from every time the laptop is turned on.

Its does let me continue to boot into Windows but then BitLocker encryption is suspended on the C: drive and the TPM is not listed in Device Manager.

The BIOS was already up to date but I’ve tried downloading it from the Dell website again and reflashing the the BIOS but its still the same.

Any ideas guys or has the TMP chip just failed? If so is this something Dell could repair or would it be a whole motherboard replacement?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Briser_fae_the_broch ​ when that loads it says ‘Compatible TPM cannot be found’.

Da_Schmoo ​ If I try the update TMP firmware options I get ‘Error: The System TMP Query Failed, Aborting’ then ‘Error: Unable to prepare the TPM update payload’. I’ve tried re-flashing the whole BIOS like it says but then cant see any BIOS settings in the BIOS.

Briser_fae_the_broch ​ No its for Widows 10, its a Dell Latitude 3580 probably about 3 years old. Its worked fine up until now and the C: drive has always been encrypted with BitLocker.

You go to the BIOS settings and then security. You will want to make sure TPM 2.0 is on, Make sure that Attestation Enable is on, Key Storage Enable is on and SHA-256 is on. If any of those is off it will not work.

Eric7615 ​ If I go to the BIOS settings and then security there are no settings for TPM. Its like it doesn’t detect the TPM at all which is why I suspect the TPM chip has likely failed.

You’ll may need to start a chat with Dell Support and get the motherboard replaced. I’ve had a few laptops and desktops in the enterprise which exhibited the same behavior — TPM simply disappeared from the bios settings. Dell replaced the motherboards in those that could not be resolved with bios upgrade or TPM utilities.

So if non of the advised techniques works then the conclusion is that any chip can fail and that includes the TPM one. It maybe that Dell will assist you but I suspect that they may want to just fit a new motherboard for which, depending on the support contract, you will have to pay. Check your state with the Service tag.

It may be better to just cut your loses and replace the laptop as the cost of repair could be more than its worth. The resell value of the laptop with a dead TPM is still likely to be good. Plenty of users don’t need a TPM chip.

We have Dell 5480’s and 5490’s that have the same issue. They are out of warranty and have never been fixed. We still use some of them with a passcode instead of a pin at startup.

This most likely doesn’t have TPM 2.0, maybe 1.2 instead. Just FYI.

No its not that because it has worked for years and just stopped.

You don’t need to replace the motherboard it is just some kind of firmware issue. I am also trying to find the solution, it is now all over the internet.

Could not try it yet but found this:

Then, I shut the laptop down, unplugged the power, press and hold Ctrl + Esc, and plug adapter back in while holding those keys. That performs some sort of BIOS or CMOS reset. I also selected to reset to BIOS defaults on the screen that appears. After doing all that, Windows recognized my TPM again, and Bitlocker works.

The Ctl Esc and power disconnect procedure fixed the problem on an Optiplex desktop PC. Yeah!

I was trying to enable Bitlocker on a Dell Optiplex 5060. I got this error «TPM device is not detected» in a Dell Optiplex 5060 after doing the Dell Command Updates. To fix this issue I had to shut down the computer unplug the power wait 30 seconds and power the computer back on. Then the TPM setting showed up in the BIOS. Simple fix but didn’t try the power down until I saw Pimiento pappkaroly’s post, thanks.
