Background / Scenario

Various models of Cisco routers and switches are used in all types of networks. These devices are managed using a local console connection or a remote connection. Nearly all Cisco devices have a serial console port to which you can connect. N ewer models used in this lab , such as Cisco 4221, also have a USB console port.

In this lab, you will learn how to access a Cisco device via a direct local connection to the console port, using the terminal emulation program called Tera Term. You will also learn how to configure the serial port settings for the Tera Term console connection. After you have established a console connection with the Cisco device, you can display or configure device settings. You will only display settings and configure the clock in this lab.

Note : The router s used with CCNA hands-on lab s are Cisco 4221 with Cisco IOS XE Release 1 6.9.3 (universalk9 image). The switches used in the labs are Cisco Catalyst 2960s with Cisco IOS Release 1 5.0(2) (lanbasek9 image) . Other routers , switches, and Cisco IOS versions can be used . Depending on the model and Cisco IOS version , the commands available and the output produced might vary from what is shown in th e labs. Refer to the Router Interface Summary T able at the end of the lab for the correct interface identifiers .

Note : Make sure that the switch and router ha ve been erased and have no startup configuration . If you are unsure, contact your Answers.

Instructions

Part 1: Access a Cisco Switch through the Serial Console Port

You will connect a PC to a Cisco switch using a rollover console cable. This connection will allow you to access the CLI and display settings or configure the switch.

Step 1: Connect a Cisco switch and computer using a rollover console cable.

  1. Connect the rollover console cable to the RJ-45 console port of the switch. Connect the other cable end to the serial COM port on the computer.

Note : Serial COM ports are no longer available on most computers. A USB-to-DB9 adapter can be used with the rollover console cable for console connection between the computer and a Cisco device. USB-to-DB9 adapters can be purchased at any computer electronics retailer .

Note : If using a USB-to-DB9 adapter to connect to the COM port, you may be required to install a driver for the adapter provided by the manufacturer of your computer. To determine the COM port used by the adapter, please see Part 3 Step 3 . The correct COM port number is required to connect to the Cisco IOS device using a terminal emulator in Step 2.

  1. Turn on the Cisco switch and computer.

Step 2: Configure Tera Term to establish a console session with the switch .

Tera Term is a terminal emulation program. This program allows you to access the terminal output of the switch. It also allows you to configure the switch.

  1. Start Tera Term by clicking the Windows Start button located in the task bar. Locate Tera Term under All Programs .

Note : If the program is not installed on the system , Tera Term can be downloaded from the following link by selecting Tera Term :

  1. In the New Connection dialog box, click the Serial radio button. Verify that the correct COM port is selected and click OK to continue.
  2. From the Tera Term Setup menu, choose the Serial port … to verify the serial settings. The default parameters for the console port are 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control. The Tera Term default settings match the console port settings for communications with the Cisco IOS switch.
  3. When you can see the terminal output, you are ready to configure a Cisco switch.

Part 2: Display and Configure Basic Device Settings

In this section, you are introduced to the user and privileged EXEC modes. You will determine the IOS version, display the clock settings, and configure the clock on the switch.

Step 1: Display the switch IOS image version.

  1. After the switch has completed its startup process, the following message is displayed. Enter n to continue.

Part 3: (Optional) Access a Cisco Router Using a Mini-USB Console Cable

If you are using a Cisco 4221 router, or other Cisco IOS devices with a mini-USB console port, you can access the device console port using a mini-USB cable connected to the USB port on your computer.

Note : The mini-USB console cable is the same type of mini-USB cable that is used with other electronics devices, such as USB hard drives, USB printers, or USB hubs. These mini-USB cables can be purchased from Cisco Systems, Inc. or other third-party vendors. Please verify that you are using a mini-USB cable, not a micro-USB cable, to connect to the mini-USB console port on a Cisco IOS device.

A PC is connected to a router via the console port.

Note : You must use either the USB port or the RJ-45 port. Do not use both ports simultaneously. When the USB port is used, it takes priority over the RJ-45 console port.

Step 1: Set up the physical connection with a mini-USB cable.

  1. Connect the mini-USB cable to the mini-USB console port of the router. Connect the other cable end to a USB port on the computer.

Step 3: (Optional) Enable the COM port for the Windows 7 PC.

If you are using a Microsoft Windows 7 PC, you may need to perform the following steps to enable the COM port:

  1. Click the Windows Start icon to access the Control Panel .

It depends on the port availability on the PC and the router or switch. If the PC has a serial port and a DB9-to-RJ45 cable is available, it is generally easier to connect to the router or switch using the serial console port. If the PC does not have a serial port, a third party USB-to-Serial adapter can be used. Cisco switches do not have mini-USB console ports, so connecting via USB is not an option. If you are frequently connecting to a Cisco router that has a mini USB console port, this can be the most effective method after the Cisco drivers are installed because nearly all newer PCs have USB ports.

Help configuring Tera Term terminal emulator.

I am independently studying for a CCNA certification at my home. I am using a Cisco video mentor disk, and they're using the Tera Term terminal emulator to demonstrate commands. I downloaded this emulator, but I cannot get it to work. How do I set it up to practice commands on my home network?

Forgive me if this is trivial, I currently work help desk and seek to expand my knowledge base to move into network security.

Tera Term is used to gain access to a terminal (Serial, Telnet, SSH, etc). It's not a simulator or anything. What are you trying to access with it?

Thanks for your reply. When the video tutor said it was an emulator, I kind of got the idea that it was a simulator of sorts. Guess that show's how little I know at this point. I'm just on a home network, wired to a Linksys Wireless-N home router.

Does a terminal simulator exist that would allow me to become familiar with terminal commands? At this point I cannot afford the cost or time of a boot camp course, so I would like to learn as much as I can on my own in my free time.

I might be misunderstanding your question, but I think you're confused about the concept of a terminal emulator. At terminal emulator is just a program that handles input from a user and output from a device, sending the input to the device and displaying the output to you (simplified view, but there you go). It has nothing to do with the connected device that interprets the input and sends output back.

In other words, Tera Term would, for example, let you connect to a Cisco switch via its serial console port. You can then type commands into the switch and get responses back. You still need the switch, though. Tera Term is just the conduit between you and the switch. It could also connect to the an HP or Foundry switch. It doesn't even know what it connects to. It just receives input from your keyboard, sends it to the connected device, receives something back, and displays it to you.

Your cheapest option for practicing CCNA level things at home is Cisco's Packet Tracer, which is an actual emulator of Cisco equipment, and not a terminal emulator.

If you're asking how to connect Tera Term to an existing Cisco switch/router to practice with: figure out what your serial port's name is to the OS (in Windows you can use Device Manager to figure this out); then create a new connection according to these parameters on that COM port.

It is a recommended best practice to maintain backup configuration files for routers and switches in the event that they need to be restored to a previous configuration. Terminal emulation software can be used to easily back up or restore a router or switch configuration file.

In this lab, you will:

  • Use Tera Term to back up a router running-configuration file.
  • Erase the router startup configuration file.
  • Reload the router.
  • Restore the missing router configuration from the backup configuration file.

Note: The routers used with CCNA hands-on labs are Cisco 4221 with Cisco IOS XE Release 16.9.4 (universalk9 image). The switches used in the labs are Cisco Catalyst 2960s with Cisco IOS Release 15.2(2) (lanbasek9 image). Other routers, switches, and Cisco IOS versions can be used. Part 1: Configure Basic Device Settings

In Part 1, you will set up the network topology and configure basic settings, such as the interface IP addresses, device access, and passwords on the router.

Step 1: Cable the network as shown in the topology.

Attach the devices as shown in the topology and cable as necessary.

Step 2: Configure the PC-A network settings according to the Addressing Table.
Step 3: Configure basic settings for the router.

a. Assign a device name to the router.

b. Disable DNS lookup to prevent the router from attempting to translate incorrectly entered commands as though they were host names.

c. Assign class as the privileged EXEC encrypted password.

d. Assign cisco as the console password and enable login.

e. Assign cisco as the VTY password and enable login.

f. Encrypt the plaintext passwords.

g. Create a banner that warns anyone accessing the device that unauthorized access is prohibited.

h. Configure interfaces as listed in the table above.

i. Save the running configuration to the startup configuration file.

Step 4: Configure basic settings for the switch.

Part 2: Create a Backup Configuration File

In Tera Term or other terminal emulation program, you can create a log of your commands and output to a device via a connection. In this part, you will record your interaction with a device using the logging feature of Tera Term.

Note: If Tera Term is not installed, you can download the latest version from a number of internet sites. Simply search for a Tera Term download.

Step 1: Create a log file.

a. Connect to the router via Serial connection in Tera Term as necessary. In the New Connection window, select the Serial radio button and the appropriate communications port for your PC (i.e., COM1).

b. From the File menu, choose Log…, and save the teraterm.log file to the Desktop. Ensure that the Append and Plain text check boxes are enabled (checked).

c. The Tera Term log file will create a record of every command issued and every output displayed.

Note: You can use this feature to capture the output from several commands in sequence and use it for network documentation purposes. For example, you could issue the show version , show ip interface brief , and show running-config commands to capture information about the router.

Step 2: Display the router running-configuration.

a. Use the console password to log in to the router.

b. Enter privileged EXEC mode.

c. From privileged EXEC mode enter the show running-config command.

d. Continue pressing the space bar when –More– is displayed until you see the router R1# prompt return.

e. From the File menu, choose Show Log Dialog. Click Close to end the log session.

Note: You can also copy and paste the text from the Tera Term window directly into a text editor.

Part 3: Use a Backup Configuration File to Restore a Router and Switch Configuration
Step 1: Erase the router startup-configuration and reload it.

a. From privileged EXEC mode erase the startup configuration.

b. Reload the router.

c. At the System Configuration Dialog prompt, type no; a router prompt displays, indicating an unconfigured router.

d. Enter privileged EXEC mode and enter a show running-config command to verify that all of the previous configurations were erased.

Step 2: Edit the saved configuration backup file to prepare it for restoring the router configuration.

To restore the router configuration from a saved running configuration backup file, you must edit the text.

a. Open the teraterm.log text file.

b. Remove each instance of –More– in the text file.

Note: The –More– was generated by pressing the Spacebar when displaying the running configuration.

c. Delete the initial lines of the backup configuration file, so that the first line starts with the first configuration command as shown below.

d. In the lines for interface GigabitEthernet0/0/1, insert a new line to enable the interface.

Change to:

e. After you have made all of the edits to the backup configuration file, save your changes to filename R1-config-backup.

Note: When saving the file, an extension such as .txt, may be added to the filename automatically.

Step 3: Restore the router configuration.

You can restore the edited running configuration directly to the console terminal in router global configuration mode, and the configurations are entered as if they were commands entered individually at the command prompt.

a. From the Tera Term console connection to the router, enter global configuration mode.

b. From the File menu, select Send file….

c. Locate R1-config-backup and select Open.

d. Save the running configuration to the startup configuration file.

e. Verify the new running configuration.

Step 4: Backup and restore the switch.

Go back to the beginning of Part 2 and follow the same steps to backup and restore the switch configuration.

Reflection Question

Why do you think it is important to use a text editor instead of a word processor to copy and save your command configurations?

A word processor could possibly add special control characters to the text making it difficult to use to restore the router.

Router Interface Summary Table

Note: To find out how the router is configured, look at the interfaces to identify the type of router and how many interfaces the router has. There is no way to effectively list all the combinations of configurations for each router class. This table includes identifiers for the possible combinations of Ethernet and Serial interfaces in the device. The table does not include any other type of interface, even though a specific router may contain one. An example of this might be an ISDN BRI interface. The string in parenthesis is the legal abbreviation that can be used in Cisco IOS commands to represent the interface.
