JSON to Excel Conversion Using Jackson and Apache POI
Hi there and we welcome you to this article on generating excel document from JSON input. Generating excel documents from JSON is a common requirement in enterprise applications. We will provide an in depth explanation on this process with full code. We will use Jackson for binding JSON data and then use Apache POI to generate Excel documents. We will build and deploy this application with the help of Maven.
So without wasting your precious time let us start the development process.
Development
For developing this application we need an IDE which supports maven. In most IDEs maven is integrated so we can easily create maven project. Now create a new simple maven project in your IDE.
Go to the pom.xml file in the root of the project. Now copy and paste the xml file below,
In the above file we have added the plugins and dependencies for this development. We will add dependencies for both Jackson and Apache POI. Make sure you are connected to internet while saving the pom.xml file since it will automatically download the libraries.
Now that we have done adding dependencies, let us continue our development process. Next thing we need is a input JSON which we will parse. Below is the input JSON which contains employee details.
Now we need to create a new package in the src/main/java path. Next we will create our main class. Below is the code for Main class,
In the above class we have code for parsing the input JSON and then generating the excel document. Let us explain this process one by one,
First we will create an object mapper and then get JSON node by using readTree() method.
Then we will get the header node.
Next we will create the workbook and sheet for our excel document.
Next we will add a row to the sheet and then add cells while iterating the header node.
We will then insert value to cells by using setCellValue() method.
Next we will get the body node and iterate it.
While iterating body we will dynamically create rows and cells and insert values to each cell.
Our next step is to create a FileOutputStream object to write our excel document.
Then we will close the workbook and handle the exceptions in the catch block
Finally we will run this maven project. We will get the below Excel document as output
