I am trying to install Windows 98 SE on my «HP Optiplex 390» with a Intel Pentium and 4GB DDR3 RAM. (I know, kinda wrong setup for Win98)
So, if I try to enter setup, it says following:

«Device Name OEMCD001»
«No drives found, aborting installation».

Then, after a few seconds, it says this:

«Device driver not found: ‘OEMCD001»
«No valid CDROM device drivers selected»
«The Windows 98 installation files were not found»

So, I guess there’s a problem with my CD-drive, right?

I also tried to install ME, but just the same happens.
On the hard drive, there’s currently Windows XP Home with SP3.

Is there a possibility to install Windows 98 or ME, or is my hardware just too new for it?

Hope this helps!

I’ve seen a video, which contains the techniques that you need to install Windows 98 on a modern PC.

By the way I tried also the same thing some years ago, and I noticed that the most high-end PC which can run Windows 98 perfectly is somewhere at Pentium 4 or a little above.
After this era you won’t, or you may find only generic drivers for hardware, so you can’t use many feature of your PC and overally, and it will be slower than installing a newer version Windows, like XP.

If you do it for some kind of limit test, that this video may helps you, but if you want to run old software properly, a less painful solution is running Windows 98 in a VM, like in Virtual PC 2007, or building a PC from somewhat older hardware.

ЗЫ эррор если без дискетки пробовать — Device Driver not found: 'OEMCD001' ..

RE: Windows 98 setup files were not found

So you never get to the A:> prompt? If not, then the startup disk is corrupted or not complete. Looks like you’ll need to create a new one.
