What Is Callservicesd?
You may have observed that an Activity Monitor process named callservicesd is using up all of your Mac’s RAM or CPU and that it is frequently joined by a process called soagent. If you’ve ever wondered what callservicesd is or what to do when it uses a lot of memory or CPU, this post will answer your questions.
What is the definition of callservicesd?
macOS callserviced is a system daemon that keeps track of incoming and outgoing calls. As a result, it’s intimately linked to applications like Contacts, Messages, FaceTime, Zoom, and others. Macintosh HD/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/TelephonyUtilities.framework/callservicesd is where you’ll locate it. When callservicesd is running properly, it uses about 8MB of RAM and consumes no CPU.
callservicesd memory leak

The callservicesd memory leak appears to be more common in macOS Monterey, and usually occurs after a Zoom or FaceTime group call. To free up RAM on your Mac, choose callservicesd in Activity Monitor and then click the cross icon to force it to quit. It will most certainly return, albeit with a considerably lower memory footprint. If that doesn’t work, try a new reboot.
The use of a large amount of RAM by callservicesd is most likely due to a Monterey problem, which Apple may fix in future releases. If a new update is available, install it to see if the memory leak bug has been fixed. Also, if you’ve personalized your Mac’s pointer, it’s a good idea to restore it to its default settings, as pointer personalization has been shown to be a major source of memory leaks on Monterey. Here’s how you can reverse the changes:
Accessibility may be found through the Apple menu > System Preferences > Accessibility. Select Display > Pointer from the drop-down menu.

Set the size of the pointer to normal, the outline color of the pointer to White, and the fill color of the pointer to Black.
Select Reset from the drop-down menu.
You can also make a clean reinstall of Monterey or downgrade to macOS Big Sur if callservicesd has become a major pain.
callservicesd High CPU usage
callservicesd CPU consumption is high. There’s probably a Contacts synchronization issue if callservicesd and soagent are both using a lot of CPU. When syncing with many accounts, callservicesd can deplete your Mac’s resources. If this is the case, keep an eye on Activity Monitor while disabling Contacts sync from one account at a time to rule out the culprit. It’s best to have Contacts synced with only one account.
If you just sync Contacts with Google or iCloud, callservicesd may consume a significant amount of CPU if the syncing process becomes stalled due to defective contacts, errors, or other factors. In that situation, you can disable and then enable iCloud or Google Contacts sync.
To disable Contacts sync on a Mac, follow these steps:
Select System Preferences > Internet Accounts from the Apple menu.
Uncheck the box next to Contacts after selecting an account from the left side.
If you don’t want to unsync your Contacts, you may make them retrieve every 5 minutes instead of instantly by following these steps:
Contacts are open.
From the top-left menu bar, select Contacts > Preferences.
Select «Every 5 minutes» from the drop-down option next to Fetch.
If none of the techniques above work, try removing all accounts from the Internet Accounts preference pane by choosing an account and clicking the minus (-) button, restarting your Mac, and then recreating them.
What if callservicesd wants to use the login keychain

Occasionally, your Mac will display a notification that reads «The login keychain is desired by callservicesd. Please enter the password for the keychain.» Regardless of whether you input the keychain password or click the Cancel button, the notification persists. If this happens to you, try the following suggestions:
Turn off the auto-lock feature on your keychain.
You may frequently hear the warning «callservicesd wants to use the keychain password.» if your keychain is locked automatically while your mac is inactive or not in sync with the app or service you’re using. You can prevent this from happening by disabling Keychain Access’ auto-lock option.
Keychain Access may be done by finding for «keychain access» on Launchpad.
From the left sidebar, right-click on «login.»
Click «Changes Keychain «login» Settings.»
Uncheck the «Lock after» and «Lock when sleeping» boxes.
Start the computer in Safe Mode.
When your Mac’s caches are damaged, callservicesd may repeatedly be requesting for a password. This may be fixed by booting into Safe Mode. When you are in Safe Mode, you should notice «Safe Boot.» To enter Safe Mode, follow the instructions below:
On an Intel-based Mac, do the following:
Turn off your Mac.
Press and hold the power button while simultaneously pressing and holding the Shift key until the login window appears.
When prompted, log in to your Mac. It’s possible that you’ll be asked to log in twice.
On an Apple Silicon Mac:
Turn off your Mac if you’re using an M1 model.
Hold down the power button until the message «Loading starting choices» appears.
Choose a volume level.
Click «Continue in Safe Mode» while holding down the Shift key.

Guide to macOS callservicesd:
What is callservicesd?
macOS callserviced is a system daemon that’s used for maintaining call state. So, it’s closely related to apps such as Contacts, Messages, FaceTime, Zoom, etc. You can find it in Macintosh HD/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/TelephonyUtilities.framework/callservicesd. When callservicesd is working well, it usually consumes no CPU and around 8MB of memory.

callservicesd memory leak

The callservicesd memory leak issue seems to occur more often with macOS Monterey, typically after a Zoom or FaceTime group call. A quick way to release memory on your Mac is to highlight callservicesd in Activity Monitor and then click the cross icon to force quit it. It will likely come back but with much smaller memory consumption. If that’s not helping, try a fresh reboot.
callservicesd using a relatively high amount of RAM likely results from a Monterey bug, which may be addressed by Apple in future updates. If there’s a new update available, you can install it to see whether the memory leak bug is resolved. Also, if you have customized the pointer on your Mac, it’s advisable to reset it to default as pointer customization has been proved a major issue causing memory leaks on Monterey. Here’s how to undo the changes:
- Open the Apple menu > System Preferences > Accessibility.
- Select Display > Pointer.
- Set the Pointer size to normal, the Pointer outline color to White, and the Pointer fill color to Black.
- Click Reset.
If callservicesd has become a big hassle, you can also do a clean reinstall of Monterey or downgrade to macOS Big Sur.
callservicesd High CPU usage
If callservicesd is consuming high CPU along with soagent, there’s likely a Contacts syncing issue. callservicesd can use up your Mac’s resources when it’s syncing with multiple accounts. If that’s also your case, you can keep Activity Monitor closely monitored while turning off Contacts sync from one account at a time to rule out the culprit. It’s recommended to keep only one account syncing with Contacts.
Suppose you have only hooked up Contacts with Google or iCloud, callservicesd may take up a large amount of CPU when the syncing process is stuck due to faulty contacts, bugs, etc. In which case, you can disable iCloud or Google Contacts sync, then re-enable it.
Here are the steps to disable Contacts sync on Mac:
- Open the Apple menu > System Preferences > Internet Accounts.
- Select an account from the left side and uncheck the box next to Contacts.
If you are unwilling to unsync Contacts, you can set the Contacts to fetch every 5 minutes instead of immediately with these steps:

- Open Contacts.
- Click Contacts > Preferences from the top-left menu bar.
- From the drop-down menu next to Fetch, select «Every 5 minutes.»
If the methods above aren’t working for you, try to remove all accounts from the Internet Accounts preference pane by selecting an account and clicking the minus (-) icon, restart your Mac, then recreate them.
callservicesd wants to use the login keychain

Sometimes, your Mac will pop up a message reading «callservicesd wants to use the login keychain. Please enter the keychain password.» However, the message keeps recurring no matter whether you enter the keychain password or click the Cancel button. If that happens to you, try the solutions below:
Disable Keychain auto-lock
If your keychain is locked automatically when your mac is inactive or not in sync with the app or service you are using, you may constantly receive the «callservicesd wants to use the keychain password.» message. To avoid it from happening, you can turn off the auto-lock feature of Keychain Access.
- Launch Keychain Access by searching «keychain access» in Launchpad.
- Right-click on «login» from the left sidebar.
- Select “Changes Settings for Keychain «login.»
- Uncheck the box next to «Lock after» and «Lock when sleeping.»
- Click Save.
Boot into Safe Mode
callservicesd may keep asking for a password when there are corrupted caches on your Mac, which can be eliminated by booting into Safe Mode. Note that you should see «Safe Boot» when you are in Safe Mode. Follow the steps below to enter Safe Mode:
On an Intel-based Mac:
- Shut down your Mac.
- Press the power button, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until the login window shows up.
- Log in to your Mac when asked. It may ask you to log in twice.
- Turn off your Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until you see «Loading startup options.»
- Select a volume.
- Hold the Shift key, then click «Continue in Safe Mode.»

Mac

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
Enter.
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
Mac.
Time Machine
Photos Agent.
Dock
Dock.
Dock.

I was able to easily replicate and stop it from happening by disabling the contact syncing on my google account in Internet accounts.
I have 1 gmail and 3 google apps accounts but it is only one of the google apps accounts that does it. If anyone knows how to identify the conflict I’m willing to give it a try.

I had the same issue (high cpu usage by soagent and callservicesd) after upgrading my Macbook to El Capitan. This thread helped me isolate the issue to syncing contacts with my Google Apps account. Unchecking contacts from the Google Apps account in System Preferences > Internet Accounts resolved the CPU issue.
But wait — I want contact syncing! After viewing some related posts in the Apple Support forums I tried repairing disk permissions (Disk Utility > First Aid) and this has resolved the issue. Contact syncing for Google Apps is back on, but without high CPU.

SYMPTOM: High CPU usage by "soagent" process. The computer gets very hot and the fan starts blowing.
WHEN: In hindsight, it started happening when I added my work’s Google/Gmail account as one of the internet accounts in my MacBook.
THE FIX: Turn off all the sync’ing of your contacts, except for one Google account’s contacts list. (You can do this by searching for "Internet Accounts" — which you can also find under System Preferences. Anything above 1 Google account sync’ing their Contacts restarted the high CPU (and having the computer heat up and the fan blowing high again). So I chose only one account that will be sync’ing its Google Contacts.

Just here to report that I’m having this exact same issue. My enabling Contacts syncing for my Google Apps account results in the Contacts app working very slowly on both my 2015 MacBook and 2012 Retina MacBook Pro. It also results in Contacts.app and accountsd having very high CPU usage and Energy usage according to Activity Monitor.
The problem only happens with my Google Apps account, not with my regular gmail.com account.
If you’re having this issue, make sure you report it at apple.com/feedback

After much messing about, here is what worked for me.
1. Remove all Internet Accounts
2. Reboot the machine (just to be safe)
3. Add back the Google Apps account and let it settle down (took about an hour I think). It wasn’t at 100% CPU this time, but both processes were working hard.
4. Once it settled down, I added the other accounts (iCloud, LinkedIn, Facebook, second Google Apps without Contacts sync turned on), etc
After that everything seems normal, and has been for the last two days.
I hope that helps someone else. Its a bit of a faff, but at least you can get back to normal CPU life.

Thread watcher, now poster.
This issue (same for me, callservicesd, soagent) is driving me mad. I have it hitting 120% CPU on restarts, and on and off during the day. When I re-boot, my fans go to 6400 for about 5 minutes. I do NOT use Google contacts syncing; only iCloud which I am blaming for this.
If I turn off contacts and calendar syncing with iCloud, system acts as normal.
I have tried everything mentioned on the net, nothing helps. As soon as syncing is turned back on the problems come back.
This is so pissing me off; and I was going to just put the beta 3 on my machine until I saw it is not fixed yet.
Another probable iCloud wondrous "not working as it should" phenomena.
